Dear Making Memories Volunteer

In cities across the nation we are working hard to find event coordinators, venues and volunteers to help put together our “Brides Against Breast Cancer” wedding gown sales. This “Nationwide Tour of Gowns” is the primary fund-raising arm of the Making Memories Foundation and requires dozens of volunteers to help make the event both fun for everyone attending and successful through the sale of gowns--thereby making wishes and dreams come true. 

Every week we receive hundreds of letters from those who want to be involved and of course, the first question is, “What is expected of me if I volunteer?”   Here is an explanation of what we need and what we do during an event to help answer those questions.  I hope after reading this that you will still want to be involved and will share the Making Memories story with your friends and family, inviting them to come along with you and make memories together that will last you and those you love a lifetime.  It’s a lot of work, but it is sure a ton of fun!!

We are in need of volunteers for several different aspects of the “Brides Against Breast Cancer” event.

1. We need at least 10 volunteers to help during the unloading of the gowns on the day prior to the actual sale, USUALLY beginning somewhere between noon and 2 pm. (Each city is has its own defining set of circumstances, so be sure to find out exactly the set-up time prior to leaving for the event.) Set-up day is almost always a Thursday but may vary depending on the sale dates. Set-up generally lasts for approximately 3-4 hours. This includes unloading the trailer, arranging racks of gowns by size in the ballroom, arranging the dressing room for brides to try on gowns, and arranging over 300 veils, shoes, slips, and other miscellaneous accessories. 

2. As many as 20 volunteers are needed between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Friday and from 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday to assist the brides in trying on and choosing the perfect gown for their wedding.  This includes help in returning gowns to their correct size racks once they have been tried on and not selected.  Depending upon how busy we are and the number of brides trying on gowns at one time, you may be helping several girls at any given moment with everything from zipping their gowns to showing them a veil you think would go perfect with their dress.  It is so much fun and you will make many new friends!

3. Finally, we need volunteers who can stay to help us tear down and repack the gowns following the event on Saturday afternoon.  Tear-down generally takes about 2 hours and we are always short of volunteers to help pack up veils, etc.  We will begin tear-down about 5:00 pm.  If you can stay to help us, we will greatly appreciate it.  We should be packed up and ready to leave by 7:30 pm if we have enough volunteers helping in the reload.  We have learned the expression “many hands make light work” really applies at the end of our sales when we have all exerted so much energy and you can’t imagine how much the extra boost of volunteer help means to us!

It is most helpful to those scheduling the volunteers if you can commit to a four hour time slot. (Of course, we would be thrilled if you’d like to stay all day or both days!) Be sure to wear comfortable shoes......and we will provide you with a Making Memories tee-shirt to identify you as a volunteer.  If you have a friend you would like to invite to come along and help, that would be great! It’s a great way to spend fun time together.  And I promise you, you will leave shaking your head – still not believing how heavy those wedding gowns can be after moving them around all day.

Men are always needed during set-up and tear down and in assisting in the return of gowns to their racks during the actual event. Encourage your husband, son, fiancé’, boyfriend to join you in helping make wishes and dreams come true!

Students, clubs, groups and organizations seeking “volunteer hours” for graduation or a community project will receive a letter noting the number of hours volunteered.
